LESSONS FROM SURAH AL-KAHF

LESSONS FROM SURAH AL-KAHF: Right after the passage about the youth that ran to the cave, there is an ayah where a debate is taking place about the youth.

They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], “My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone.” [18:22]

What is the purpose of Allah inserting this debate? One of the lessons that we learn from this is that many of us love to pick at the irrelevant stuff. We love to argue about what’s haram and what’s not, play the role of the haram police, argue about the minor things, get caught up in useless stuff. Through arguments, we lose sight of the priority. We miss the big picture. And by picking and arguing we become undivided, we become disunited.
May Allah make up amongst those that prioritize the Deen as it needs to be. May Allah protect us from becoming haram police and protect us from useless argumentation.
